First Studio Session

This week my self and my project (partner in crime) went into the studio on an endeavour to record a little scratch track for our song and make a little demo of one of my songs. This was uninteresting experience as I was very excited to get in there and have a go at some recording because coming from the diploma of music production we didn’t spent much time in there. Nell on the other has had a lot of experience in the studio during the first two trimesters of her Batchelor. This was good for both of us as Nell got the opportunity to really test to see if she could teach someone how to set up a protools session and was very helpful for me to watch and learn!

Nell brought in her beautiful acoustic guitar so we could have a go at micing it up and seeing what type of sound we could get. We thought we’d juts try and do something simple so we figured just one fo us would sing and play while the other person recorded. We got out a heap of gear from the tech department. A cardioid mic for vocals, 2 sm-57’s (for the guitar) and some leads and patch cables. Something I need to work on this tri ASAP is knowing all the functions of various microphones and why they are the correct ones for certain instruments due to their frequencies etc.

After we got the live room set up (which we both were exceptional at) we headed into the studio room. I was a little familiar with setting up the protools session how ever Nell helped me make sure all the out puts and inputs were in order. After this we had no problems getting sound from the live room into the studio and into a session.

However, we needed to patch some reverb into the heap phones so that while I sang and played my voice didn’t sound so raw and put me off. We had a little bit of trouble finding the right in and out puts but through our knowledge of signal flow we found the right way to patch it! I took lots of videos and we both practiced it a few times to make sure we would forget so next time we go in it will be quicker.

I did a take of one of my songs but just sang and played at the same time therefor there was a bit of bleeding between the microphones. This wasn’t too much of an issue as were more wanted to practice setting up the studio.

In the mixing room we listened to the track and ‘one take wonder’ was actually pretty good even though there was a bit of bleeding between the mics. We added some EQ band passes and put a little more reverb on the guitars. This made the song have a spacey and hall sounding vibe has a listener and it turned out actually pretty goof for a practice take.

Can’t wait to get back in the studio on Wednesday and see what we can achieve for our project.
