On Tuesday i sent my first mixes to an acquaintance of mine who has his own private studio here in Brisbane and one that is public in Melbourne. I had met him a few times though some musician friends and he is going to master the Jang EP.
Tyson Ruth is a recording/mixing/producing engineer based in Brisbane. He has worked with a lot of cool local bands such as The Jensens, He Danced Ivy, The Steele Syndicate and Sid's Balcony this year alone. He works in his private studio here in Brisbane but has founded a company inspired by his own name called Studio Truth. Something i found out today is that Tyson actually studied the Batchelor of Audio here at SAE 7 years ago. It's cool, to know someone who has been though what I am currently and has his own recording studio.

After asking Tyson what he thought of my first mixes this was the feedback I received.
"Alter Ego - Great work on vocals, sounding very wide. Would love to hear higher BVs - Drums are a little quiet, specifically kick drum vs bass guitar (reference similar bands in this style to see where they place their drum vs bass) - Kick could definitely use a fair bit more sub/lowmids - Bass guitar is a tad loud in general - Guitar tones are spot on
Leave It To Ian - Vocals are quite loud relative to other instruments. I find a good trick is to turn your monitors down super low and then place the vocals where you can clearly hear them relative to the other instruments without them covering everything else up. - Great work on the vocal tones, vibey - Guitar tones are great, especially in the solo. - Instrumental in general should go up, bass/drum balance is better on this song.
SPIN - Overall balance is good on this song, however stereo image appears to be mono for most of the song. Try to make use of the stereo space available in the mix. i.e. automating chorus/solo sections to be wider/narrower for dramatic effect.
General Notes - Great guitar tones - Great vibey vocals - Drums/bass could use a little balancing. - Would love to hear more of the drums in general. - Bass level seems to vary quite a bit between songs which would indicate a monitoring issue. Try listening to your mixes across different systems to make sure everything balances well - Would be great to hear more dynamics in sections (try automating the master fader +/- 1dB going into choruses/quiet parts. - The elements have been recorded well and sound faithful to their sources - Good work!"
I will be able to incorporate all these elements while complete my mix for assessment next week. I am very glad I sought out some industry feedback as this will also help me to reflect and learn as I a mixing.
