Over the course of the mixing process for Local Animality the only feedback Mike and I had been getting through the early mixing stage was from each other. The other day we had the opportunity to get some feed back on all our mixes from people who had never heard them before. This was something that have been really looking forward too before sending off a another mix to the bands. Mike and I decided that we wanted to get the tracks up to a mastered standard that we were happy with before sending them off for notes.
I was really interested about the type of comments we were going to get. I thought I had a pretty good idea about the drum elements of the album maybe being the strongest mixing point for us but it was interesting to see what people said. I defiantly wasn't happy with a few of these mixes when we were getting feed back and it was nice to have positive feed back on those as well as reinforcing the things that I felt were a little out of place.
Overall, the feedback was really great for almost all the songs. It was interesting to see consistencies between peoples feedback. It was also interspersing to see the creative suggestions people were making. It was super helpful for a few of the songs in particular.
Some constancies between the songs that I mixed were:
Cucumber Castle: A lot of people said to bring the vocals up and the cymbals down in this one. This makes sense there is a lot of effects on the vocals that have high swelling frequencies the defiantly clash with the overhead mics.
Moon and Back: Vocal level and thickness compared to the snare. Also they are a little out of tune which is something that I have been working on using Melodyne over the last few weeks.
Polyester Girl: Again vocals a bit too quiet. I think that I might juts listen to way too much shoe gaze or something and always end up making my vocals washy and a bit distorted. I really want this track to shine because I think it's dope and the vocals are really pretty. I will bring them up and alway use more compression on the reverb and bring it down a little in the mix.
Same same: The vocals are defiantly sitting in a different place to the rest of the mix I think. They need more compression to make them sound as full as the band, I am glad that people like the guitar tone because I was sweating on it for a while.
Untouched: People really like the guitar sound on this one which was great. I worked really hard on the drums on this and I think almost every comment said they were good so that's cool. I am pretty happy with this one even though it is missing a horns section!
I made these changes in the mixes and sent them off to the bands which was a really good feeling. I am still waiting for feed back from them but we have a little bit of time to make changes before the final masters need to be done.
